Blue grama grass is a cool season grass which is found in Northern U.S. and Canada. Blue grama grass is rather short, and has round stems with narrow blades, growing extensively in the plains region of the U.S. It is used frequently for livestock grazing and distributed as hay for the same purpose. If allowed to flower, small spiklets appear on top of the blade. This grass is a heavy pollen producer. The pollinating months are July-September.

Grains are spheroidal to ovoidal, sometimes elliptical. The exine is thin and the surface is granular to finely reticuloid. Poaceae apertures are 1-porate, with the pores usually circular to ovoidal.
